If you're considering any pregnancy scan

All pregnancy scans are optional, not just ours but also the ones offered to you by your local hospital. The protocols we use for our scans have never been shown to cause harm to either mother or baby. We use a principle when scanning called As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA), i.e. the minimum scanning time and system settings that still provide the best quality results. The study of ultrasound safety continues to be reviewed and we monitor this subject very closely.

What is Informed Choice?

We humans constantly make choices; what we select depends on our needs, wants, desires and sometimes our state of health. How we decide is a process based on experience, knowledge and what we want the choice to do for us. Occasionally, we learn new information that may affect whether we continue with our original choice.

What is Informed Consent?

In ‘medical speak’ it means someone’s willingness to accept or decline a test, treatment or procedure after learning about the risks, benefits and alternatives. It relies on the information gathered from various sources such as experience, healthcare providers and research. It can be hard to make sense of all the information; to know what is relevant to you and your family, so an element of trust may be necessary. With screening tests in particular, it is important to consider what you may do with the results, or if you feel better to just “leave alone”.

Early Pregnancy Scans: 7 to 11 Weeks

You may have chosen to have an early pregnancy scan (sometimes called viability or early scan) to either confirm you are pregnant or to find out if you are still pregnant. Most of the time, the scan will be able to reassure you at the time it is carried out, that you have an on-going pregnancy and all is well. Occasionally, it is not easy to see clearly if your pregnancy is a viable one and, more sadly in a few pregnancies, the scan will show you that the baby has died and the pregnancy will not continue. Whatever happens, we will be there to plan your care and support in everyway we can. Check our early pregnancy scan service description and price or book online now.

Dating Scans: 10 to 16 Weeks

A dating scan (sometimes called a booking scan) will tell you how many weeks pregnant you are and if you are having one or more babies. Like an early pregnancy scan, it will also tell you if your pregnancy is ongoing or not. Check our dating scan service and price or book online now.

Nuchal Translucency (NT) Scans: 11 to 13 Weeks 6 Days

The NT scan (or nuchal scan) checks that the fetus appears normal and screens for Down’s syndrome. It is important before taking this screening test, that you think about the implications of the test and how you might feel if your baby falls into the increased risk category. The scan is very thorough and specialized; combined with a simple blood test, it is designed to find out if your baby is at a higher risk of having Down’s syndrome. This test will not tell you if your baby actually has got Down’s but it will let you know if your baby’s risk, or chance, is increased or low. If the result is increased, you may want to choose further tests that will confirm or deny this. They can be done by your hospital or we can help you arrange this privately. We include pre-screen counselling with this service to confirm this is the right scan for you and your family, whatever the result. Check our NT scan service and price or book online now.

Anomaly Scans: 19 to 24 Weeks

Sometimes called a detailed anatomy scan, an anomaly scan looks at the fine details of your baby such as the head, chest, heart, stomach, kidneys and limbs and possible ultrasound “soft markers” - slight deviations from the normal anatomy which may or may not indicate a problem. It is designed to reassure all is well with your baby, or pick up any possible problems. Check our anomaly scan service and price or book online now.

Growth Scans: 24 to 34 Weeks

To confirm that your baby is growing as expected, a growth scan (sometimes called a wellbeing scan) is often suggested. It will also give you an estimated fetal weight at the time of the scan. Bear in mind that it is only an estimation and can vary by as much as 25%. Your baby’s growth will be monitored by your Midwife at your antenatal appointments and, if there are any concerns, s/he will discuss this with you. Presentation Scans: 35 Weeks Onwards

Using ultrasound, a presentation scan will tell you which end of the baby is ‘presenting’ or coming first. The vast majority of babies are head-first. About 3% will be bottom down at the end of a pregnancy. Most breech babies will be found at an antenatal appointment with your Midwife, who will then offer to refer you as per your hospital guidelines. Occasionally, it’s not until labour starts that a bottom is found, but this is extremely rare. Knowing in advance will help you decide what your options are and what sort of birth to plan. Gender Scans: 16 to 34 Weeks

As the name suggests, a gender scan (or sexing scan) will tell you if your baby is a boy or girl, but please note that ultrasound cannot provide a 100% guarantee. You may want this professional opinion to share with your partner, your family or simply to do the all-important shopping. Some women find bonding with their baby easier if they know the sex. Some prefer the surprise on their birth day. Check our gender scan service and price or book online now.

4D Scans

The latest technology allows moving, 4D pictures of your little one to be transferred to DVD or CD-ROM for you to keep and share with your family and friends. Some research shows us that women who have had a 4D Scan report feeling ‘closer’ to their baby, making the baby more ‘real’. One of the surprising advantages of this is that it helped some women take much better care of themselves with very positive outcomes. Check our 4D scan service and prices or book online now.

Bad News

Very rarely, there may be a problem that is totally unexpected and we are the bearers of bad news. Never easy to hear, we will ensure you have the time, support and a plan of care arranged. We will continue our course of support for as long as you need us.

All of our pregnancy scans are done with care and attention with you and your family. We strive to give you as accurate information as we can. There may be constraints, such as the way the baby is positioned, that prevents the Sonographer from getting accurate details. Occasionally with ultrasound, some details may be missed and sometimes there may be something seen that may turn out to be of no importance at all, but in nearly all cases parents leave their appointment with us feeling reassured and continue with a typical healthy pregnancy.
